Lake Ohrid is one of the most beautiful lakes of the Balkans.

There are plenty of amazing things to do in Ohrid, from taking boat trips across the lake, hiking, exploring the Old Town, to enjoying the tasty food and wine near small beaches. While Ohrid is full of the most beautiful sights, do not forget to simply wander, lose yourself, and just enjoy Ohrid’s old city. Ohrid and the surroundings are a great region to visit during your holiday in Macedonia: you can enjoy sightseeing, and then chill out by the lakeside (or even swim at Lake Ohrid) or hike in the surrounding mountains.

Besides seeing the town, you must see the marina, too - it offers not only one of the best views on Lake Ohrid, but it has a few cool extras, such as quirky bunkers. The Kings Samoil fortress, which was renovated in 2003, it is most certainly worth making the trek to it, so that you can get an optimum view of the aptly named Lake Ohrid and surrounding mountains from high up. The St. Naum monastery itself is picturesque, overlooking the majestic Lake Ohrid, and features a nice ancient church and well-kept gardens.

The church, also known as St. John the Theologian, is reached by walking uphill on the lakefront, and although you cannot really get inside the church itself, the views are worth the trip alone. The best place to see the church in Kaneo is from a little viewpoint just above the church, which allows for classic shots of the church looking out onto majestic Lake Ohrid. The best spot to view the famous panorama and get a nice shot is from the top of the church, as you are walking down the hillside fortress toward Lake Ohrid. Because of its nice position, on a tall cliff overlooking Lake Ohrid, the panorama of the little church with blue waters in the background is perhaps the most popular Macedonian photo that you will see on all folders.

Before heading downhill towards Ohrid city, make sure you take the steps up to the viewpoint just above the church, it will give you the best views of the church and allow you to take that picture like a postcard from Ohrid. The views from the more prominent viewpoint of Ohrid are hard to beat, as you will see the entire Old Town, as well as looking down on majestic Lake Ohrid from either direction. Following paths either coming down from the Most Dominant Landmark or those running down along the shoreline, you will come upon this beautifully scenic church. Wander through the picturesque Old Town until you find an ancient Hellenistic-style theatre built in 200 B.C., which still hosts concerts and plays during summer, and climb up a hill to Tsar Samuils fortress, where you will get an amazing view of Ohrid lake and lake.

Located on the hilltop of Old Town, this ancient place serves as one of the main entry points into Lake Ohrid, offering an amazing view over the lake and city. Lake Ohrid is famous for its ancient churches, among them St. Pantelejmon, Europe’s oldest Slavic monastery, St. Sophia, dating back to the 11th century, Holy Mother of God, Perivleptos, famous for its murals, and St. John Kaneo, picturesquely situated on the cliff. The remarkable Plaosnik archaeological complex houses the medieval polydome church St. Pantelejmon, rebuilt from a monastic foundation in the year 893, the year St. Clement arrived at Lake Ohrid. The Church of St. John Kaneo is an emblem of Ohrid, thanks to its picturesque position on the cliff above the Kaneo beach, looking out onto Lake Ohrid, and distinctive Byzantine architecture, making it one of the most photographed places in all North Macedonia.
