The trek to Kilimanjaro starts from Moshi, Tanzania.

For those who are unaware, Moshi is a mid-sized city located at the base of Mt. Kilimanjaro in Tanzania. The friendly city of Moshi is popular as a base to hike up Mount Kilimanjaro. While the famed mountain may be the primary attraction of Moshi, Moshi is also a gateway to many other wonderful places, which will provide a glimpse into east Africa. Moshi is surrounded by lots of small coffee farms that cascade down over the Kilimanjaro foothills, so take the packed Daladalas with locals and head for the tiny village of Materuni, 15km north of town and on the foothills of Mount Kilimanjaro. From Moshi, you can go on short treks and day trips to see the local tribes and villages, and to see crops and coffee plantations. You can take tours visiting the fishing villages around Lake Chala, do reed-canoe safaris (a little bit like Okavango Delta), walking safaris and fishing trips. Apart from the swim at Chemka/Kikuletwa hot springs, you can go on a primates sighting, birdwatching, and a cultural visit with a local tribe in the area. Day tours are organised to explore the Materuni Waterfalls for soaking up waterfalls or getting incredible views of Kilimanjaro mountain and Moshi town. The day tours will start with a short trek up the falls, where you will get a chance to splash around in Kilimanjaro Mountain Waters and take in stunning views of surrounding valleys. The hike up to the Materuni Waterfalls from Moshi is the ideal option for anyone looking for some relaxation, adding in some walking around crater lakes, enjoying the serenity of the location, and if visited at the right time of the year, herds of elephants will keep you company in the distance. Not only do you get a beautiful view of Mount Kilimanjaro on a bright day, but this is also a good place to spend some hours, and to watch the people, since the majority of locals still take a stroll down the trail as part of their daily routine. Whether you prefer hitting up a store or sampling the local cuisine, Moshi has plenty to offer. In case you are hesitant about venturing outside Moshi, the city centre is still fun for wandering around the markets and peeking at local shops. To truly get engrossed with the locals’ lives, there is nothing quite like walking down a Moshi road. We recommend spending one day chilling out in Moshi, followed by one to explore some of the intriguing tours on offer. What makes Moshi so unique is that Moshi is hidden behind one of the world’s finest landscapes, snow-capped Kilimanjaro. Moshi is one of Tanzania’s top two coffee producing towns, and you would know it by the smelly, sweet air coming out of the major coffee-processing factories. From breath-taking landscapes, waterfalls, hot springs, restaurants, discos, museums, craft shops, and incredible wildlife, Moshi has everything for tourists. Others visit Moshi when they are doing a safari through nearby Serengeti, Arusha, Lake Manyara, and the Ngorongoro crater National Parks.
