Description

Explore Hangzhou’s hidden Muslim legacy on a guided walking tour. Visit ancient tombs, mosques, and a vibrant Muslim neighborhood.
Begin near the West Lake, but off the tourist trail, in a peaceful park area where several ancient Muslim tombs are located. These include the graves of foreign Muslim merchants and officials who came during the height of the Maritime Silk Road. Hear stories of early Islamic influence in Hangzhou, including the tale of the Persian merchant Bahtiyar and the maritime journeys that brought Islam to China.

Next, take a short walk to the Phoenix Mosque (凤凰清真寺), one of the oldest mosques in eastern China, originally built in the Tang Dynasty and reconstructed during the Ming. Though modest in appearance from the outside, inside you’ll find Islamic calligraphy, stone steles, and a prayer hall still in use today. Learn how Chinese-style mosque architecture blends Islamic and local traditions.

Later, visit Hangzhou’s modern mosque in the Jianggan District, a newly built Islamic center with space for hundreds of worshippers. Here, you'll be given time and space for prayer or quiet reflection.

Finally, head back to the city center. We get into Qingzhen Street, known informally as “Muslim Street.” This small but vibrant area is home to halal butcher shops, grocers, and community restaurants. Hear about how Hangzhou’s Hui Muslim population keeps their customs alive today. For those who’d like, conclude with an optional meal at a halal-certified Turkish or Iranian restaurant. Enjoy grilled meats, rice dishes, tea, and sweets, a perfect end to the cultural journey.
