Description

The best thing about our hike to Lukomir? Hiking along the second deepest canyon in Europe? The magical Studeni Potok plateau? Or the village of Lukomir itself? You decide!
We begin our guided hiking tour to Lukomir in the quiet village of Umoljani. Stone mosque or petrified dragon – the legends of this place tell of courage and tolerance. From Umoljani, the trail leads through the Studeni Potok lowlands with their wild herbs, along the Rakitnica Canyon, the second deepest gorge in Europe, through meadows and forests.

We encounter only sheep, cows, or perhaps a herd of wild horses, and here and there a few other hikers. The panorama of Visočica accompanies us along the entire route, and with a little luck we discover waterfalls until we reach the village of Lukomir after about two and a half hours.

Although there is now Wi-Fi, the clocks tick even slower here. Life here feels like stepping back 100 years in time. Slowed down. Digital detox.

In summer, 17 families live in traditional stone houses, making a living from agriculture and tourism. Grandmothers knit priglavke (wool socks), shepherds tend their animals, and housewives conjure up the best pita – because after a hike in the mountains, it always tastes better.

That's why we also have lunch with a Bosnian family in the village. The table is set with freshly cooked seasonal dishes. Cell phones remain off, except maybe for a photo! In Lukomir, there is some time to explore the village with its mosque, the viewpoint overlooking the canyon, and the tombstones from the time of the Bosnian Kingdom and the Bosnian Church – a UNESCO World Heritage Site.

Afterwards, our route takes us back to Umoljano, from where we return to Sarajevo. Note: The entire hike is about 16 kilometers long, with a walking time of 4-5 hours.
