Begin your journey with a visit to Berat, an architectural marvel where history feels alive. Explore its three iconic neighborhoods, starting with Berat Castle. Unlike most castles, people still live within these 13th-century walls. Wander the citadel, walking through narrow stone alleys to see the mix of Byzantine churches and Ottoman ruins. Head to the southern tip of the castle for a panoramic view of the entire city and the Osum River below.
Next, visit the twin neighborhoods of Mangalem and Gorica. Located at the foot of the castle, Mangalem is where you’ll see the famous rows of white houses with stacked windows. Visit the King Mosque and the Halveti Tekke for stunning hand-painted ceilings. Cross the 18th-century stone Gorica Bridge to reach the Gorica Quarter. It’s quieter and offers the best photo opportunities of the Mangalem houses across the river.
Continue to Belsh, a hidden gem focused on relaxation and "slow tourism" around its karst lakes. Take a lakefront walk along the beautifully renovated promenade around the main lake. It’s perfect for a 15-minute stroll or a quick coffee at one of the lakeside terraces. Find a statue dedicated to the goddess Aphrodite near the water, reflecting the area’s ancient Hellenistic history.
