Your day starts with a drive into the heart of the Rila mountains to reach Belmeken Lake. At 1,900m, this turquoise reservoir offers a pristine alpine landscape. It’s the perfect spot for photos of rugged peaks and high-mountain fresh air before our heritage journey begins.
The Alpine Railway
We reach Avramovo, the highest railway station in the Balkans (1,267m). Here, you board the legendary narrow-gauge retro train. Sit back for a 1.2-hour journey through spiral tunnels and hidden valleys—a route famously ranked by The Guardian as a top European rail experience.
Curated Afternoon: Wine or Water
We have pre-arranged your afternoon activity so you can simply relax and enjoy. Choose your preference:
Boutique Wine Tasting: Visit a local estate in the Thracian Valley for a guided tasting of premium Bulgarian wines, including the bold local Mavrud, paired with regional appetizers. (Available all year).
Thermal Mineral Pools: Dip into the outdoor thermal pools of Velingrad, the "Thermal Capital." A natural, refreshing way to unwind before the return to Sofia. (Available May – Sept).

IMPORTANT INFORMATION
Mountain Climate: Belmeken Lake is at 1,900m. Even in July, it can be 10°C cooler than Sofia. Please bring a light jacket or windbreaker.
Comfortable Footwear: We will be walking on uneven mountain terrain and cobblestone station platforms. Wear sturdy sneakers or hiking shoes.
Authentic Retro Train: This is a heritage narrow-gauge railway. The train is vintage and slow-moving by design (no AC). It is a nostalgic cultural experience, not a high-speed commute.
Thermal Pool Essentials: If choosing the thermal option, please bring your own swimwear, flip-flops, and a towel, as these are not provided at the outdoor pools.
Cash for Lunch: While activity fees are covered, lunch is at your own expense. Most local spots in Velingrad prefer cash, though some take cards.
We pick up from a location in Sofia center - outside Banya Bashi Mosque on Maria Luisa Blvd, opposite McDonalds near Cerdica Central Metro Station.

When should I book?
To guarantee availability book as soon as possible. Early booking is worth consideration especially if you planning the trip during high season like public holidays or weekends.
Cancellations
This excursion you can cancel with no cost up to 24 hours before the start of the trip. If you cancel it after 24 hours or not show up on the excursion you will still be charged the full price of the activity. Being late on pick-up or departure will be considered as not showing up.
