Meet Karl-Heinz Richter, born in Schwarzheide in Brandenburg in 1946 and who grew up with his family in East Berlin. Three years after the Wall was built, he planned to flee to the west and tried to jump on a moving train at Friedrichstrasse station. The escape failed and "Kalle" Richter spent several months in inhumane conditions in pre-trial detention in the Stasi prison in Berlin-Pankow.

Experience GDR escape history first hand as Richter describes to you his attempts to leave, and reveals the truth about everyday life in East Germany. Hear moving stories of his experience as a political prisoner, and the influence of the Stasi throughout East German society.
