Four-Day Trek into the Simien Mountains
Day One: Transfer from Gondar to Sankabar Camp
Your adventure begins with a scenic transfer from Gondar to Sankabar, the starting point of your trek. Upon arrival, you will have the option to embark on a two-hour trek before reaching the campsite. This hike offers an incredible opportunity to take in the panoramic views over the escarpment and observe the remarkable wildlife of the region. Large groups of the Gelada monkey, an endemic species to Ethiopia, can frequently be seen along the way. After a day of exploration, you will camp at Sankabar, located at an altitude of 3,250 meters above sea level, where you can enjoy a restful night under the stars.
Day Two: Trek from Sankabar to Gich Camp via Jinibar Falls
The second day of the trek takes you from Sankabar to Gich Camp, with a rewarding stop at Jinibar Falls. The hike will take approximately six hours, offering stunning views and a diverse range of landscapes along the way. As you progress, you will be able to observe the lush flora and dramatic cliffs of the Simien Mountains. Gich Camp, situated at 3,600 meters, will be your destination for the night, offering a peaceful setting to relax and reflect on the day's journey.
Day Three: Trek from Gich to Chennek via Imet Gogo
On the third day, you will continue your trek from Gich to Chennek, a journey that will take around nine hours. Along the way, you will pass through Imet Gogo, a spectacular viewpoint that offers unrivaled vistas of the Simien Escarpment. The breathtaking panorama from this spot is one of the highlights of the trek, with sweeping views of the jagged cliffs and valleys below. As you descend into the Gich Plateau, you will encounter the striking Giant Lobelia, a rare endemic plant that thrives in this high-altitude environment. Upon reaching Chennek, at an altitude of 3,620 meters, you will be greeted with more stunning views and an excellent chance to observe wildlife, including the iconic Gelada monkeys, the elusive Walia ibex, and, with some luck, the Ethiopian wolf. After a long day of trekking, you will camp at Chennek for the night.
Day Four: Morning Trek Around Chennek and Afternoon Transfer Back to Gondar
On the final day of your trek, you will have the opportunity for a morning trek around Chennek, allowing you to further explore the stunning landscapes and wildlife of the Simien Mountains. Whether you take in the views or try to spot more wildlife, it will be a memorable way to wrap up your trekking experience. In the afternoon, you will begin your descent back to Gondar, marking the end of your remarkable four-day trek in one of Ethiopia's most beautiful and remote regions.
