Description
Experience the thrill of biking down the world-famous Death Road. Descend over 3,600 meters from the Andes to the Amazon, taking in breathtaking views and conquering the extreme road.
Start your adventure with a drive from La Paz to the Yungas valleys. Begin biking at La Cumbre, at 4,700 meters (15,400 feet) of altitude. Take in fantastic views of snow-covered peaks, including Huayna Potosí. Descend rapidly down a twisting, asphalted road among mountain peaks, grazing llamas and alpacas, tiny villages, and a drug check-post. Stop for refreshments, photos, and rests along the way to take in the scenery: towering cliff faces, dramatic drops, and ever greener vegetation.
After a snack, ride on, descending in altitude even further. After a brief undulating section of road, enter the jungle itself and the most challenging part of the ride. Ride on the infamous narrow dirt road known as Death Road, cut precariously into the side of the mountain and descending 2,000 meters (6,500 feet) in altitude.
With 1,000-meter (3,300-foot) sheer drops off to your left and hulking rock overhangs and cascading waterfalls to your right, ride on through mist, low cloud, and dust. As you near the end of the ride, it gets progressively hotter and dustier. By the time you arrive at the bottom of Death Road in Yolosa (near Coroico) at an altitude of 1,200 meters (3,600 feet), you will be hot, dirty, and exhilarated, having conquered the extreme Death Road.
