Description

Explore the Torre de Belém and Mosteiro dos Jerónimos in the historic Belém neighborhood of Lisbon. Visit places that perfectly capture the Portuguese spirit and mark its important military position at the mouth of the River Tagus.
Embark on a journey through history on a 3-hour walking tour of the historic Belém neighborhood. Settled since Paleolithic times, but coming to importance during Portugal’s great days of maritime might, the district is a delight of military outposts, modern symbols, gorgeous squares, and Manueline buildings.

Most significant among this architecture is the Mosteiro dos Jerónimos and Torre de Belém, both UNESCO World Cultural Heritage sites. The ornate Manueline style of the Mosteiro dos Jerónimos was influenced by the theme of great discoveries. Originally, the home for the Hieronymite religious order, it was built by the Infante Henry the Navigator around 1459.

You will also visit the iconic quarter façade of the Tower of Belém on the banks of the Tagus River. Built from limestone in the early 16th-Century, it was declared one of the 7 Wonders of Portugal in 2007, and inscribed by UNESCO in 1983.

In addition to these monumental sites, Belém is a place of lovely local color. Its main street, the Rua de Belém, boasts 160-year-old buildings that have survived years of change. They include the famous pastry shop “Fabrica de Pasteis de Belém,” where the Portuguese confectionery, Pastel de Belém - a delicious egg tart made with flaky pastry – is at its finest.
