Description

Escape the city and discover the peaceful Bachkovo Monastery and the spectacular Assen’s Fortress, perched high above the Chaya River, while enjoying the beautiful scenery of the Rhodope Mountains.
From Plovdiv we head towards the Rhodope Mountains, passing through the pretty town of Assenovgrad. We drive along the picturesque Chaya River, and on one of the winding mountain bends we catch our first breathtaking view of the majestic Assen's Fortress, standing proudly on top of a dramatic cliff.
Our first stop is the picturesque Bachkovo Monastery. Founded in 1083, it is the second-largest monastery in Bulgaria and one of the country's most sacred historical and spiritual sites.
After visiting the monastery, we continue to the remarkable remains of King Ivan Assen’s Fortress. Built high above the valley, it was named after the wise ruler of the Second Bulgarian Kingdom. Here you will discover a beautifully preserved 13th-century church with authentic medieval frescoes and iconography, as well as the famous stone inscription carved during the reign of King Ivan Assen.
We can stop along the way whenever you wish. If you are the only one booked for that day, the tour will be private. Please note that the maximum number of people who can join is 6.
