Description
Step aboard Changcheng-191, China's first self-designed submarine, moored in a historic Jiangnan Shipyard dock. Explore 7 original cabins on the Huangpu Riverfront.
Moored at the historic No. 3 slipway of the former Jiangnan Shipyard on Shanghai's Huangpu Riverfront, the Changcheng-191 is China's first domestically designed and built conventional power submarine. Commissioned in the 1970s, it patrolled China's waters for over three decades before being decommissioned and permanently docked here as a living testament to Chinese naval history.
Step inside and explore 7 fully open cabins: squeeze through torpedo-loaded weapon bays, peer through the original periscope in the command center, stand in the realistically preserved engine room, and see the 50-centimeter-wide bunks where submariners lived for months at a time. Every hatch, valve, and instrument dial is authentic — nothing is a replica.
The exhibition is set within a 12,600-square-meter complex designed by Finnish architecture firm PES, where award-winning industrial heritage design seamlessly connects the Huangpu waterfront promenade with the submerged dock below. After your submarine tour, explore the adjacent open-air dockyard and take in views of the Lupu Bridge and World Expo site framing this remarkable industrial landmark.
