Description
Travel back through 250 million years at the Museum am Löwentor in Stuttgart. Marvel at dinosaurs, marine reptiles, mammoths, and the 300,000-year-old Steinheim skull.
Step into one of Germany's most impressive paleontology museums and travel hundreds of millions of years back in time. The Museum am Löwentor is one of two exhibition buildings of the State Museum of Natural History Stuttgart, beautifully set in the green Rosenstein Park within walking distance of Schloss Rosenstein. Here, 3,500 m² of exhibition space rises up to 14 meters high in one open hall – no dividing walls, just a sweeping, cinematic stage for the giants of Earth's past.
The collection focuses on the spectacular fossil finds of southwestern Germany, which has long been considered a world hotspot for prehistoric discoveries. Come face to face with full skeletons and scientifically accurate reconstructions of dinosaurs, the legendary fish-saurians (ichthyosaurs) from the Holzmaden shale, ancient marine reptiles, prehistoric mammals, and ice-age giants like the cave bear and the mammoth. Easy-to-follow displays trace how birds evolved from dinosaurs and how life on Earth recovered from mass extinctions.
A real highlight is the famous Steinheim skull, a roughly 300,000-year-old human fossil – one of the oldest hominid finds in Central Europe – which gives a goosebumps-inducing sense of our deep human past. Just as impressive: the dedicated amber room, where insects, spiders, lizards, and even tiny flowers sit preserved in golden, millions-of-years-old droplets of resin – a window into ecosystems long gone.
Throughout the building, interactive stations make the deep-time story tangible, especially for kids and families. The museum shop offers original gifts and books on paleontology to take a piece of prehistory home with you.
