Description
Learn about the Hanseatic League on this history tour through the city of Hamburg. Find out how a medieval collective of markets grew from a handful of German towns to monopolizing trade in Europe.
On this Hamburg history tour, you’ll step back in time to learn all about the influence of “the Hanse,” as you explore our harbor city with a local guide. Explore the historic architecture of the third largest port in Europe and uncover the unique character that defines Hamburg.
You’ll meet your tour guide in front of St. Katharinen church. After meeting your guide (and driver) at your hotel you will head to the St. Katharinen church. This is one of the five principal Lutheran churches in Hamburg, as well as the second oldest preserved building in the city. It traditionally served as the church of the seamen, who you’ll learn about as you dive into the history of The Hanse.
Your first next stop is Speicherstadt, one of the largest warehouse complexes in the world, built between 1883 and 1927. This is where exotic goods like coffee, spices and rugs were transported, along the beautiful canals and into various houses. To gain a deeper understanding of the important role this warehouse played, you’ll go inside the fascinating Speicherstadt Museum.
Then, head onto the famous Elbphilharmonie, or the “Elfi” as locals call it. No trip to Hamburg is complete without seeing the incredible (and controversial) architecture of one thousand glass windows atop a 1960s brick warehouse base.
From there, you’ll stroll along the St. Pauli Piers (or the Landungsbrücken), the largest landing place in Hamburg Port. At the western end, we’ll head into the Old Elbe tunnel. This tunnel under the River Elbe opened in 1911 and was a welcome relief for thousands of commuting workers headed into one of the world’s busiest ports.
