Description

The history of red beer in Nuremberg
On our red beer tour, the rich beer history of Nuremberg comes alive for you at original underground locations. As early as 1380, the first rock tunnels were dug into the castle hill to mature and store the barley juice. Would you have guessed that the city council had already determined in 1303 – a good 200 years before the Bavarian Purity Law – that only barley malt could be used for brewing? Here in Nuremberg, it was dried so intensely that the beer took on a very special color: the legendary Nuremberg red beer was born. It's the namesake of this tour and dominated the local market for centuries. But unfortunately, the variety was later forgotten. With "Red Beer in Deep Cellars," we present the beer history of Nuremberg as a multifaceted journey of ups and downs.

By the way, we've been able to satisfy your curiosity about the taste of the medieval city beer for a long time now. The Altstadthof brewery has resurrected the original Nuremberg red beer. At the exit, we'll tell you all about its history and, of course, we won't leave you high and dry. A small commented beer tasting awaits you in the brewery right next door. Our red beer tour finally ends with a visit to the whiskey warehouse, because it can also be made from the red beer malt in excellent quality.
