Meet your guide at JR Matsumoto Station’s Castle Exit and begin your walk toward Nakamachi Street. Explore this preserved merchant district, known for its traditional white-and-black storehouses, small craft shops, and old wells supplied by Matsumoto’s clear spring water.

Continue to Nawate Street beside the Metoba River. Browse its characterful local shops, discover the street’s famous frog symbols, and visit Yohashira Shrine while learning about everyday life in Matsumoto’s historic castle town.

The main highlight is Matsumoto Castle, one of Japan’s most celebrated original castles. Learn about its black exterior, defensive design, wooden interior, and the samurai who once lived around it. In autumn, the surrounding trees add red and golden colors to the castle grounds, creating memorable photo opportunities.

When the weather is clear, capture views of the dark castle framed by the Japanese Alps in the distance. Your guide will help you find attractive angles and take photos throughout the walk.
