Discover the historic town of Sawara on a guided day trip from Narita. Take a boat cruise on the Ono River, visit the Matsuri Float Museum, and explore the town's historic district. Then, visit the Naritasan Temple and stroll along the picturesque Narita Omote-sando street.

Meet your guide at Narita train station and take a local train to Sawara. Once you arrive, take a short walk to reach the town's historical district. Admire the beautifully preserved buildings dating back to the Edo period.

Next, take a traditional boat cruise on the Ono River. Pass under many of Sawara’s pretty bridges and see the historic architecture from a different perspective on the water. Learn about the town's past, architecture, and residents from your guide.

Head to the Matsuri Float Museum to learn about the cultural and sacred Japanese tradition of its festivals, which are now recognized as Intangible Cultural Heritage by UNESCO. See two of the floats used and see many artifacts relating to the festival.

Enjoy some free time to explore the historic district in more depth. Get something to eat or simply enjoy Sawara at your own pace by exploring the cafes, shops, and soaking up the local atmosphere.

After your free time, take a short walk back to Sawara station and catch the train back to Narita. Arrive back into Narita and walk to the beautiful and historic Naritasan Temple. Established in the year 940 CE, it became a popular pilgrimage site and is now one of the most visited temples in Japan.

The complex is made up of stunning pagodas, worship halls, a serene park, and a Calligraphy museum. Depart the temple complex and make your way back towards Narita station. Walk along the picturesque and equally historic Narita Omote-sando street. This long street leads on directly from the temple, and is lined with an array of wonderful shops, cafes, and eateries selling street food, souvenirs, and local crafts.
