From Quito: 3-Day Mindo Birdwatching Tour with Meals

Day 1: Quito to Mindo

Begin your journey with a morning pickup in Quito and a scenic drive descending the western slopes of the Andes into the lush cloud forest. Stop at San Tadeo Bird Sanctuary, an excellent introduction to Mindo’s avian diversity, where feeders and forest edges attract colorful species in a short amount of time.

Enjoy lunch in Mindo town, followed by a check-in at Mindo Wood Cabin, a quiet eco-retreat surrounded by forest and gardens frequented daily by birds. In the afternoon, visit the Mariposario (butterfly garden) for a relaxed, self-guided experience. Return to the cabin to enjoy the gardens, observe visiting birds, and unwind before a private dinner at the cabin, immersed in the sounds of the forest.

Day 2: Nambillo Cloud Forest

Start early and head to the Nambillo Cloud Forest, one of the best birdwatching areas in the region. Morning light and activity levels offer excellent opportunities to spot toucans, woodpeckers, hummingbirds, aracaris, tanagers, and many other species.

Enjoy breakfast at a scenic cloud forest lookout while continuing to observe birds moving through the canopy and forest edges. By late morning, return to the cabin to rest, followed by lunch in town. In the afternoon, head back to Nambillo Forest for a second birding session, focusing on species that are more active later in the day and refining sightings missed in the morning.

Day 3: Andean Cock-of-the-Rock

The final day features one of Mindo’s signature experiences: the Andean Cock-of-the-Rock lek. Early morning, enter the forest to observe this spectacular species during its courtship displays, a highlight for birders and photographers alike.

Enjoy breakfast in the cloud forest, surrounded by mist and birdsong. Around 11:00 am, pack up and begin the return journey to Quito, arriving in the afternoon, where services conclude.
