Description

Join The Wild Source for Denver’s closest wildlife experience, a safari at Rocky Mountain Arsenal aboard the Roaming Bison. Enjoy year-round private tours with expert guides, views, and rich wildlife.
Join The Wild Source America for Denver’s newest and most immersive wildlife experience—a Rocky Mountain Arsenal safari aboard the one-of-a-kind Roaming Bison safari vehicle.

Your expert guide will be your host, driver, and resident wildlife specialist, sharing insight into the wide variety of mammals and birds found throughout the refuge. Travel in comfort in the fully outfitted Roaming Bison, modeled after African safari vehicles, featuring a pop-top roof for 360-degree wildlife viewing and photography. Behind the front row, there are just six upgraded bucket seats on adjustable tracks—each with a window view. No backseats or obstructed views here.

Safaris are available year-round, and no matter the weather (this is Colorado, after all), the Roaming Bison is climate-controlled with front and rear heat and A/C, and a refrigerator to keep drinks perfectly chilled. Onboard are high-quality binoculars and a spotting scope to enhance wildlife viewing. A padded lip on the window rails allows for bean bags or attaching a swivel mount for cameras.

The Setting:
The Rocky Mountain Arsenal National Wildlife Refuge is a 15,000-acre urban sanctuary just 10 miles from Downtown Denver. It’s home to bison, coyotes, mule deer, white-tailed deer, bald eagles, hawks, burrowing owls, prairie dogs, and—if you're lucky—North America's most endangered mammal, the Black-footed ferret. In all, over 330 species of mammals, birds, reptiles, amphibians, and fish have been recorded here.

What to Expect:
You’ll begin your experience at the Rocky Mountain Arsenal Visitor Center. Start times vary seasonally and are customized to your interests, but we typically recommend departing about 3 hours before sunset for ideal lighting and wildlife activity. (Early morning departures are available upon request, especially for photographers.)

Meet your local, seasoned wildlife expert from The Wild Source (headquartered in Golden, CO), for a short 10-minute orientation before setting off on your adventure.

The safari follows the park’s 11-mile Wildlife Drive, offering the chance to spot iconic species like bison, bald eagles, coyotes, deer, and prairie dogs, along with seasonal and migratory birds. Raptors such as Swainson’s hawks, ferruginous hawks, and bald eagles are often seen, along with waterfowl and summer highlights like burrowing owls, which nest in prairie dog burrows.

The Game Drive:
Your drive will last about two hours, typically including two full loops of the Wildlife Drive, depending on sightings. Dusk is peak time for wildlife activity, and safari timing adjusts with the seasons and sunset hours.

You’ll be dropped back at the Visitor Center parking lot at the end of the safari.
