Addis Ababa Cultural & Culinary Adventure: Cook, Taste & Explore
Duration: 5–6 Hours
Location: Addis Ababa
Experience the true heart of Ethiopia through its flavors, traditions, and vibrant city life. This immersive journey begins in the kitchen and continues through the cultural treasures of Addis Ababa.

1. Warm Welcome & Traditional Ethiopian Coffee Ceremony

Your day begins with a heartfelt Ethiopian welcome and an authentic coffee ceremony — one of the countries’ most cherished traditions. You will learn how green coffee beans are washed, roasted over an open flame, and ground by hand using a traditional mortar and pestle. As the rich aroma fills the room, your host will brew the coffee in a traditional clay pot (jebena) and serve it in small cups.
During the ceremony, discover the deep cultural meaning of coffee in Ethiopian social life — a symbol of respect, community, and hospitality.

2. Preparing Traditional Ethiopian Dishes

Step into the kitchen for a hands-on cooking experience guided by a local expert. You will begin preparing Ethiopia’s most beloved dishes using fresh ingredients and traditional spices such as berbere and mitmita.
Learn how to:
• Prepare flavorful stews like doro wot (spiced chicken stew) or shiro (chickpea stew)
• Chop, season, and simmer dishes using authentic techniques
• Understand the balance of spices that make Ethiopian cuisine unique
This interactive session allows you to actively participate rather than just observe.

3. Injera Baking Experience

No Ethiopian meal is complete without injera — the soft, spongy sourdough flatbread that serves as both plate and utensil. You will mix the fermented teff batter and learn the art of pouring it in a circular motion onto a traditional clay stove called a mitad.
Watch as tiny bubbles form on the surface, creating injera’s signature texture. Your host will explain the cultural importance of injera and its role in bringing people together around a shared platter.

4. Traditional Ethiopian Lunch & Cultural Dining Experience

After cooking, sit down to enjoy the delicious meal you helped prepare. The dishes are served on a large injera platter and eaten by hand, following Ethiopian dining customs.
You will also experience the tradition of gursha — feeding a guest or loved one by hand as a gesture of friendship and respect. This moment captures the warmth and communal spirit of Ethiopian hospitality.
Conclude your experience with a final cup of coffee and reflections on the day. You will leave not only with full memories and recipes but also with a deeper understanding of Ethiopian culture, cuisine, and community
