Description

Come and discover the ochre stone used to build Aix-en-Provence and learn the ancestral techniques of construction and cutting with a stonemason and sculptor.
Come and check out the site where they extracted the ochre stone to build the city of Aix-en-Provence and its history, then try your hand at the ancient techniques of stone cutting with a stonemason and sculptor.
In the first part of the tour, Elodie, a tour guide, will take you through this picturesque place and explain the methods of extracting this ocher-yellow limestone, called "Bibemus stone", which was used to build the city of Aix-en-Provence from Antiquity until the 19th century.

We'll head down into the canyon to check out the quarryman's work, with photos to help us out.

Next, we'll check out the outdoor workshop of professional stonemason and sculptor David Campbell, who'll fill you in on the traditional techniques of stone cutting and shaping.
Finally, he'll give you a cutting demonstration, and you'll get to practice and try your hand at cutting, tools in hand.

CANCELLATION POLICY The tour will be postponed if the prefecture decides to close the quarries the day before. Entry tickets are non-refundable. If the minimum number of participants is not reached, tickets can be exchanged for a later tour or a similar tour: a credit note will be issued.

Please ensure you have civil liability and repatriation insurance. We accept no liability in the event of an accident, failure to comply with safety rules, leaving the marked trails, or wearing footwear unsuitable for hiking.
Meet 30 minutes before the start of the tour at the Parking des 3 Voucher Dieux (GPS coordinates: 43.53491, 5.47560), then drive in convoy to the entrance of the Bibémus Quarries, Chemin de Bibémus (access to the site by car is restricted – there is a barrier on Chemin de Bibemus). If you are running late, even slightly, please contact us.

Cancellations

This excursion you can cancel with no cost up to 24 hours before the start of the trip. If you cancel it after 24 hours or not show up on the excursion you will still be charged the full price of the activity. Being late on pick-up or departure will be considered as not showing up.
