Description

Explore the history of Matala and Kommos Beach on a day tour. Learn about the hippie culture that once thrived in Matala, visit Kommos, and relax on the beach.
Explore the village of Matala, a famous destination in South Crete. See the caves on the beach and learn about the hippies who lived there during the 60s and 70s.

See the caves of Matala, which were constructed by humans and used as settlements in prehistoric times. In Roman times, they were used as tombs. In the 60s and 70s, thousands of hippies came to live in the caves of Matala, as there was a sense of absolute freedom.

After the 70s, the Greek government forced them to leave, so they spread to other isolated areas of Crete, as well as on the island of Ios, in the Aegean Sea. Today, Matala is one of the most touristically developed areas of south Crete.

The beach is organized with sunbeds and umbrellas. The roads of the village are painted every year with bright paintings that express messages and jokes of our times, with a “hippy” mentality.

Next, visit the beach of Kommos, the southernmost part of the coastline of Messara.

See big dunes and a forest of tamarisk trees. These trees are called in Greek “almyriki” and they grow close to salty environments. The beach of Kommos is one of the places where the Mediterranean turtle Caretta-Caretta lays its eggs, from May until September.
