Description

11 stops across sea and land: Sunrise at Padar Island, Pink Beach, Komodo Island, Manta Point, Taka Makassar, Siaba, Batu Cermin, Rangko Cave, Melo Village, Sylvia Hill & Kampung Ujung night market.
Almost everyone in Labuan Bajo spends a day on the water. Fewer turn inland, and miss the Flores where people live. This covers both.

STOP 1 - PADAR ISLAND
Pickup is between six and seven, on an air-conditioned speedboat with a toilet on board. Leaving early puts you on the ridge before the large groups. The paved trail takes thirty minutes to the viewpoint, where three bays open below, each a different colour of sand.

STOP 2 - PINK BEACH
The sand really does run pink, coloured by red coral ground into the white. The reef starts a few metres out, so you snorkel from the beach.

STOP 3 - KOMODO ISLAND
A guided walk with a park ranger through dry savanna where the dragons live wild. Nothing is staged or fed. The ranger reads the ground for tracks and stays with the group.

LUNCH ON BOARD
An Indonesian rice box on deck: grilled chicken or fish, vegetables, sambal and fruit. Tell us at booking if anyone is vegetarian.

STOP 4 - MANTA POINT
A channel where manta rays feed on the current, some with wingspans wider than you are tall. Our guide gets in the water with you, not watching from the deck. Sightings are common but not guaranteed.

STOP 5 - TAKA MAKASSAR
A crescent of sand alone in the sea, the water clear enough to read the reef from above.

STOP 6 - SIABA
Green turtles graze the seagrass and often stay put while you float above them. Masks, fins and life jackets are on board in all sizes, and the guide stays in the water with anyone who is not a strong swimmer. Our crew shoots the boat day on GoPro and camera and sends you the files free. Back by five.

After visiting Siaba Island, you will return to Labuan Bajo and be transferred directly to your hotel.

STOP 7 - BATU CERMIN CAVE
The mainland day starts at nine. Light through cracks in the roof reflects off salt in the rock, hence the name, mirror stone. Coral fossils show it once lay under the sea.

STOP 8 - RANGKO CAVE
A local wooden boat takes you across. We time this for midday, the only hour when light reaches the chamber and turns the saltwater pool bright turquoise. Bring swimwear, you get in. Lunch after is in town, at a place you pick.

STOP 9 - MELO TRADITIONAL VILLAGE
A Manggarai village in the hills, where the view runs back down to the bay and the day slows.

STOP 10 - SYLVIA HILL
The best sunset point in Labuan Bajo, harbour on one side and islands on the other. On the way down, a stop for hand-woven Flores tenun.

STOP 11 - KAMPUNG UJUNG NIGHT MARKET
The harbour night market, where the town eats grilled fish after dark. Pick your own stall. Hotel by eight.

Arah Pesona is locally owned and registered with the Ministry of Tourism. Groups are capped at fifteen and you travel with a licensed guide, not only a driver.
