Description

Discover Japan’s Alpine heartland on a 2-day tour from Tokyo. Explore Matsumoto, Takayama, Shirakawa-go, and Kanazawa with an English-speaking guide.
Begin your adventure with a stress-free departure from Shinjuku Station aboard the Limited Express Azusa to Matsumoto. Visit the iconic Matsumoto Castle, one of Japan’s few remaining original castles, followed by a walk through Nakamachi Street, known for its Edo-style white-walled merchant houses. Enjoy free time for lunch, with a recommended local specialty: Sanzoku-yaki (mountain-style fried chicken).

In the afternoon, travel by scenic bus through the Northern Alps to Takayama, an atmospheric Edo-period town nestled in the mountains. Visit Takayama’s Old Town, the Morning Market, and see the historic Jinya government office (exterior). Stay overnight at a carefully selected hot spring ryokan, where you’ll experience a traditional Japanese-style room, complete with a relaxing bath and a Hida beef dinner—a regional culinary highlight.

On day two, journey to the storybook village of Shirakawa-go, where steep thatched-roof farmhouses define the landscape. Visit the historic Wada House, then enjoy free time to wander, shop for handmade goods, or try optional experiences like gold leaf crafts or local folk-art workshops (reservation in advance recommended).

Conclude your tour in Kanazawa, a city that blends samurai heritage and refined elegance. Walk through the renowned Kenrokuen Garden, considered one of Japan’s top three gardens, and explore the preserved geisha district of Higashi Chaya, where you may optionally enjoy a tea ceremony or gold leaf experience before ending the tour at Kanazawa Station.
