Description
Discover the historic coastal city of Kamakura on a guided day trip from Tokyo. Visit the Tsurugaoka Hachimangu Shrine, see the Great Buddha at Kōtoku-in, and explore the island of Enoshima.
Begin your journey at the Tsurugaoka Hachimangu Shrine, a spiritual symbol of the samurai era with more than 800 years of history. The shrine has long served as the cultural and religious center of Kamakura and remains one of Japan’s most important Shinto sites. During the Japanese New Year tradition known as Hatsumode, around 2.5 million visitors come here to make their first prayers of the year, making it one of the most popular pilgrimage destinations in the country.
Next, visit the lively Komachi Street, located near Kamakura Station. This vibrant shopping street stretches about 360–600 meters and features around 250 shops selling traditional crafts, souvenirs, fashion items, and delicious local foods. While walking through the street, you can sample Kamakura specialties such as Shirasu dishes, dumplings, croquettes, and a variety of sweets while enjoying the energetic atmosphere.
Continue to the beautiful Hasedera Temple, one of Kamakura’s oldest temples, founded in 736. The temple is famous for its impressive 9.18-meter wooden statue of the Eleven-Headed Kannon, the Buddhist goddess of mercy. Hasedera is also known for its stunning gardens and seasonal flowers, including cherry blossoms in spring, hydrangeas in early summer, and colorful autumn foliage. From its hillside location, visitors can also enjoy scenic views over Kamakura and Sagami Bay.
Nearby is the famous Kōtoku-in Temple, home to the iconic Great Buddha of Kamakura. This bronze statue of Amida Buddha stands about 13.3 meters tall and weighs around 121 tons. It is one of Japan’s most important Buddhist monuments and has been designated a National Treasure. Visitors can even step inside the statue to observe its internal structure, while the peaceful temple grounds provide a calm and reflective atmosphere.
A short drive away is Enoshima, a charming island along the scenic Shonan Coast. Attractions include the historic Enoshima Shrine, the observation tower Enoshima Sea Candle, and the dramatic Enoshima Iwaya Caves formed by ocean waves. You can also walk through Samuel Cocking Garden, a lovely botanical garden with seasonal flowers. On clear days, visitors may even enjoy distant views of Mount Fuji.
The streets around Enoshima are filled with lively shops, cafés, and seafood restaurants serving regional specialties. With private transportation in a luxury Toyota Vellfire or Toyota Alphard, along with convenient hotel pickup and drop-off, this tour offers a relaxed and premium way to experience the history, culture, and coastal beauty of Kamakura and Enoshima.
