Family Friendly Tour around Phnom Penh City seeing significant sites and learning about the history of Cambodia before setting off to nearby Silk Island to spend some time in rural countryside and getting away from the hustle and bustle of the city. This tour does not include any genocide sites, so is ideal for families and those who prefer a day that does not involve 'black tourism.'
1. After morning pick-up, the first stop will be the impressive Independence Monument which represents independence of Cambodia from French colonisation which lasted for 90 years, from 1863 - 1953. The Park Strip that the monument stands on is free entry.
2. The King Norodom Sihanouk Statue also stands on the popular Park Strip of Phnom Penh. built in honour of the King in 2013 after his death.
3. Located nearby, is the Royal Palace where you can visit inside and admire the beautiful architecture and take advantage of the photographic opportunities that the Royal Palace offers. Entry fee: $10 plus another $10 for a guide. There is no audio guide available.
4. Admire one of the most beautiful examples of Cambodian architecture of the National Museum. This building also offers beautiful photo opportunities.
5. Wat Ounalom was originally built in 1442 and is one of the most important Temples in Phnom Penh. Entry: free
6. Central Market is next on the itinerary. It is said to be the biggest market in Asia. The bright yellow building was designed by French architect Jean Desbois and was completed in 1937. With its 26 metre high central dome and branching hallways, it houses countless stalls and a variety of goods.
7. Wat Phnom and Lady Penh Monument is the final stop before lunch. Learn who Phnom Penh is named after and why. Temple Entry: $1.
8. Enjoy lunch (not included in cost of tour) before heading off to the Golden Temple on the way to crossing the Mekong River. This fifty plus year old temple is known for it's lavish use of gold paint.
9. Crossing the Mighty Mekong River by Ferry, arrive at Koh Dach, more commonly known as Silk Island. Here you can see and learn about the full cycle of silk cloth making, after which we can traverse in and around the island enjoying some time in a more rural setting away from the hustle and bustle of Phnom Penh city. Entry into Silk Farm: $2 ea, children under 10 years are free.
10. Returning to Phnom Penh city, again via the ferry, be dropped back at your hotel at the end of the day.
