From Siem Reap: Day Trip to Sambor Prei Kuk

We will take you on a full-day trip from Siem Reap to the Sambor Prei Kuk Temple complex to discover Cambodia's best-preserved pre-Angkorian monuments. Departing at 08:00, take a 2-hour car or minivan ride to Kampong Thom. From there, follow a dirt road leading to the ancient city of Chenla. Explore the impressive temple complex and witness the remarkable pre-Angkorian architecture.

In the early 7th century, Sambor Prei Kuk served as the capital of the Kingdom of Chenla in the 7th Century. This ancient Khmer realm is referred to as "Zhēnlà" in Chinese records. Constructed under the rule of King Isanavarman I, the site held significant religious importance as a center dedicated to the worship of Shiva.

With over 100 temples, predominantly crafted from brick, the ruins are divided into three main clusters spread across the partially cleared jungle. Explore the peaceful temples, such as the Prasat Yeay Peau, surrounded by ancient trees creating a tranquil atmosphere, and the ornate lion carvings of the Prasat Tao.

Lunch will be had at a good local restaurant. Proceed to Kampong Thom, the provincial capital, and explore a nearby local market. Afterward, start the journey back to Siem Reap, making stops at the 12th-century Angkorian Kampong Kdei Bridge. Additionally, visit the quaint fishing village of Thnori Chek, where you can take a leisurely walk through the fish market and immerse yourself in contemporary Khmer daily life.
