Duration: 03:00 hours

Description

Participate in a compassionate walking tour through Africa's largest urban slum. Show empathy and responsible tourism by taking less pictures. Gift, smile and encourage.
Slums are considered to be places of diseases, poverty and crime. While that might be true, there is more to it. Kibera is known to be a place of talent, hardwork and endurance and laughter. Many great people in Kenya have come from Kibera. You can only appreciate and see this perspective when you visit Kibera.

In Kibera, you will find children from different communities playing together without a care of their surrounding. You will find adults helping each other to cross a bridge. You find women selling groceries on the streets to support their families. Widows make necklaces and bracelets from magazines while men make jewellery from bones of different animals. You will also find alot of small music studios, makeshift movie theatres, art galleries and small factories making handmade items like shoes.
While on this tour you might not visit all of this places, you will appreciate the possibility of all these happening as you interact with the industrious people of Kibera.

In this tour, we highly encourage empathy and responsible tourism. We discourage taking lots of pictures and acting entitled. Saying Hello or 'Habari' to people, buying soda or bottled water from local shops, letting locals pass first on narrow streets, cheering the kids as they play, helping the old and doing acts of service is highly welcomed on this life changing experience. We discourage giving money randomly as it creates a negative and high expectation among the locals on all tourists.

There has been exploitation of these vulnerable persons. There has also been a great deal of exploitation of tourists or persons with the intentions of helping out. We discourage any by ensuring that tourists do not carry commercial cameras in this experience and they do not take phone numbers of any persons while on this tour. We also ensure that all donations are converted to food, school and household supplies. We also ensure that we do not give out tourists phone numbers or make financial demands.
