Description

From Ancient Berytus to Modern Beirut — 5,000 Years of History, Architecture and Urban Transformation
Discover Beirut on an extensive walking journey spanning more than 5,000 years of history, tracing its transformation from an ancient Phoenician settlement into a Roman metropolis, a medieval trading port, an Ottoman provincial capital and a modern Mediterranean city.

Beginning in Beirut's historic heart, the tour explores the archaeological remains and architectural landmarks left by successive civilizations. From the Phoenician Wall and Crusader Fort to the Roman Baths, Al Omari Grand Mosque, Nejmeh Square and Martyrs' Square, discover how each era shaped the city's urban landscape. Along the way, encounter landmarks associated with the Lebanese Civil War and uncover the events, divisions and personal stories behind this turbulent chapter of Beirut's history.

The journey then moves beyond the former city walls into Beirut's earliest suburbs, where rapid urban expansion began in the 19th century. Discover historic mansions, traditional Beiruti houses, schools and residential buildings reflecting the city's growing prosperity and changing society. Explore the evolution of local architecture, from iconic triple-arched houses and red-tiled roofs to the emergence of Art Deco, modernist and International Style buildings between the 1930s and 1970s. These neighbourhoods also preserve visible scars of the Civil War, with bullet-marked façades and surviving buildings revealing stories of the communities who lived through the conflict.

Continuing through Rue de Phénicie and Beirut's historic hotel district, discover the city's golden age as a glamorous Mediterranean destination and a thriving centre of nightlife and international tourism during the 1950s, 1960s and early 1970s. Luxurious hotels, fashionable nightclubs, cabarets, restaurants and bars once attracted celebrities, wealthy travellers, artists and the regional elite, earning Beirut its reputation as the "Paris of the Middle East." Explore the stories behind its legendary nightlife and iconic establishments, including the Phoenicia Hotel and Holiday Inn. The latter's battle-scarred structure also recalls the dramatic **Battle of the Hotels**, when prestigious landmarks became strategic positions during the early years of the Civil War.

The journey concludes along the Mediterranean Corniche, where Beirut's coastline offers a final perspective on the city's evolution, from its ancient maritime origins and glamorous golden age to the upheavals of war and its continuing transformation.

More than a sightseeing tour, this immersive journey brings together Beirut's archaeology, architecture, urban history, culture, nightlife and wartime stories, revealing the many layers of a city that has continuously reinvented itself over the centuries.
