Discover the Millennium Cross, the Church of Saint Panteleimon, and the Matka Canyon on a half-day trip from Skopje. Admire the views from the top of Vodno Mountain, visit a church with stunning frescoes, and explore the oldest artificial lake in North Macedonia.
Begin your tour with a visit to the Millennium Cross, a 66-meter tall cross situated on the top of Vodno Mountain in Macedonia above the capital city of Skopje. Built in 2002, it is one of the tallest crosses worldwide. It was constructed to serve as a memorial for 2,000 years of Christianity in Macedonia and to honor biblical passages citing the evangelization activities of St. Paul within the region.
The monument has become a symbol associated with or representing Skopje. As a landmark, the cross has turned into a tourist destination with the best observation point to see the panorama of the capital city.
Next, head to the Church of Saint Panteleimon, located at Gorno Nerezi. Admire the church's stunning frescoes, which are considered some of the most beautiful in the world.
Finally, head to the Matka Canyon, located west of central Skopje. Covering roughly 5,000 hectares, Matka is one of the most popular outdoor destinations in Macedonia and is home to several medieval monasteries. The Matka Lake within the Matka Canyon is the oldest artificial lake in the country.
