Welcome to Vranje, home of melos and sevdah, legends and traditions, colorful dance and excellent southern food. Feel the soul of a place where a completely different philosophy of life still exists, getting to know its most interesting sights that you simply must visit.
Vranje - Tucked away at the crossroads, the tumultuous historical stage of southern Serbia, the place woven of opposites.
The mixture of cultures gave Vranje its distinctive traditions and symbols. Vranje is known as the capital of melos: few places in Serbia have given birth to so many colorful and diverse songs, dances and music. The Vranje folk costume is equally recognizable and luxurious.
The intersection of cultures and empires on which the city was shaped made Vranje culture an unusual combination of the incompatible. It was the same with the cuisine, so that unusual combinations of flavors that you won't find anywhere else in the world have developed in this area. A special charm is given by the combination of Serbian cuisine with not only oriental notes, but also Bulgarian and Macedonian cuisine. The most famous traditional dish of this region is "Samsa", an empty pie topped with sour milk with the addition of garlic. There are, of course, many other types of pies, special cooked dishes and desserts inspired by the Orient.
Our adventure starts in Skopje, from where we go to the Prokhor Pchinjski border crossing, where we will visit the monastery of the same name from the 11th century, built by the Byzantine emperor Roman Diogenes. Here we will feel the peace and quiet of the present moment, we will admire the ancient building and we will taste small things prepared by the diligent hands of the women who take care of the monastery as well as delicious coffee.
From here we will head to Vranjska Banja, one of the oldest baths in Serbia, where we will briefly visit the termal bath of Serbian King Peter built before the World War I, with spring water of 96 ° C, probably the hottest in Europe. There is a possibility to bathe in the hot pools with prior announcement.
From here we will head to the unique Vranje. Our first stop will be a visit to the house-museum of Bora Stankovic, the greatest representative of Serbian realism, whо best describes Vranje in his novels, in local dialect.
The next stop is a wine tasting, at our local friend Bozo, a lover of wine, and even more of the city. A true virtuoso and friend of the city.
A wonderful walk through the center to the old Turkish bath follows, and on the way back an unforgettable lunch with typical specialties from Vranje at Bobos "kafana".
Return to Skopje follows in the afternoon.
