Experience the magic of Chiapas: explore the Sumidero Canyon, visit El Chiflón waterfalls, discover the Lakes of Montebello, and meet indigenous communities in this complete tour.
Day 1: Sumidero Canyon, Chiapa de Corzo, and Arrival at San Cristóbal
Our adventure begins at Tuxtla Gutiérrez Airport in Chiapas. From here, we head to the embarkation dock for the Sumidero Canyon, one of Mexico’s most stunning natural wonders. On a boat ride along the Grijalva River, we’ll marvel at cliffs rising over 1,000 meters high. Throughout the trip, you’ll see a wide range of wildlife, including spider monkeys, crocodiles, and pelicans, as well as fascinating rock formations like the Horse Seahorse and the Cave of Colors.
Next, we continue to the picturesque town of Chiapa de Corzo, where we’ll visit the Santo Domingo de Guzmán Church, the Lacquer Museum, the Central Plaza, and its Mudéjar-style Kiosk. You’ll also have free time to sample local dishes like slow-cooked pork and Chiapas tamales. Finally, we’ll head to San Cristóbal de las Casas, where you’ll check into your hotel and enjoy the rest of the afternoon free to explore.
Day 2: El Chiflón Waterfalls and Lakes of Montebello
On the second day, we head early to the El Chiflón Ecotourism Park, surrounded by mountains and sugarcane fields. Here, you’ll enjoy a walk through trails lined with cedar and mahogany trees, while discovering breathtaking waterfalls like “Veil of the Bride” and “Rainbow”. The most stunning of them all is the 120-meter-high waterfall that creates a dramatic water curtain. You can also try additional activities like zip-lining (not included).
Next, we continue to the Montebello Lakes National Park, a natural paradise with over 50 crystal-clear lakes and lagoons, surrounded by lush vegetation. We’ll visit the most important lakes, including Lake Montebello, Lake Pojoj, and the International Lagoon, where you can enjoy activities like boat rides or kayaking (not included). The area is also known for its traditional cuisine, and you’ll have the opportunity to sample local dishes.
Day 3: Indigenous Communities of Chamula and Zinacantán
On the final day, we visit the indigenous Tzotzil communities of Chamula and Zinacantán. In San Juan Chamula, we’ll explore the church dedicated to Saint John the Baptist, where Maya and Catholic rituals blend. On Sundays, local people gather at the market to sell their products. Then, in Zinacantán, we’ll visit the church dedicated to Saint Lawrence and enjoy an interactive experience with the local families. We’ll learn about their traditional textile work and even participate in making tortillas. After this unique cultural experience, we’ll head back to Tuxtla Gutiérrez Airport to end the tour.
