Description
Immerse yourself in Mexican history during its three great periods: pre-Columbian, colonial and modern Mexico. Get to know Teotihuacan.
Embark on a fascinating tour of Mexico's rich religious heritage, visiting the shrine of Guadalupe, the ancient archaeological site of Teotihuacan, and the Colonial Church of Santiago in Tlatelolco. Along the way, your local guide will share captivating stories that will bring each of these places full of history and mysticism to life. The tour begins at the Plaza de Las Tres Culturas, Tlatelolco's main square, where you will learn about the three great periods of Mexico's history: pre-Columbian, Spanish colonial, and modern and mestizo Mexico. Stop at the Church of Santiago, built on top of Aztec ruins in 1522, and discover what the Aztecs' last confrontation with the conquistador Hernán Cortés was like. Next, you will head to Mexico's most important sanctuary: the Basilica of Our Lady of Guadalupe. This is the site where, according to tradition, the Virgin appeared to San Juan Diego. Here, you can admire both the old and the new basilica, and see the tilma (cloak) of St. Juan Diego, one of the most venerated relics in the country. On your way to Teotihuacan, you will stop at an obsidian workshop, where you will learn about this volcanic stone that was essential to the inhabitants of Teotihuacan. You will have the opportunity to buy some handcrafted pieces and take home a unique souvenir. Later, you will enjoy a tasting of traditional liquors and, if you wish, you can opt for a delicious lunch with authentic Mexican flavors. The tour culminates at the impressive citadel of Teotihuacan, which dates back more than 2,500 years. This "birthplace of the gods" remains a mystery as to its origins. Walk along the majestic Avenue of the Dead, climb the 243 steps of the Pyramid of the Sun and marvel at the jade and obsidian decorations on the Pyramid of the Moon. Observe the bird ornaments on the pillars of the Palace of Quetzalpapalotl and the impressive carvings of the feathered serpent in the Temple of Quetzalcoatl, a unique and unforgettable experience not to be missed!
