Description

Discover more than 15 forgotten Soviet mosaics across 4 locations in Transnistria. Explore one of Eastern Europe's most remarkable collections of monumental art.
Transnistria is one of Europe's least-visited destinations, yet hidden across its towns and villages is a remarkable collection of Soviet monumental art that has survived largely unchanged since the fall of the USSR.

This private half-day tour takes you to more than 15 Soviet mosaics and 2 bas-reliefs located across four different places: Tiraspol, Bender, Ghisca, and Sucleia. Together, they form one of the most unusual surviving collections of Soviet public art in Eastern Europe.

Created between the 1960s and 1980s, these mosaics once decorated schools, public buildings, cultural centers, and sports facilities. Built from thousands of hand-placed tiles, they celebrated themes such as labour, science, progress, nature, education, and collective life. Today many of them remain almost completely unknown outside the region.

The route begins in Tiraspol, the capital of Transnistria, where several large-scale mosaics survive on prominent public buildings. From there, the tour continues to Sucleia, home to a rare combination of mosaic art and Soviet bas-reliefs.

In Bender, six mosaics can be found across different parts of the city. Surrounded by architecture that has changed little since Soviet times, they offer a unique glimpse into the visual culture of a vanished era.

The final stop is the village of Ghisca, where two little-known mosaics survive on former community buildings. Far from traditional tourist routes, they represent a type of Soviet public art rarely seen by international visitors.

Throughout the tour, your guide will explain the history, symbolism, artistic techniques, and local stories behind each work. Having spent years researching and documenting Soviet-era heritage in Transnistria, your guide provides context that transforms these colorful panels from decoration into historical documents.

All sites are located in public spaces and can be viewed without museum tickets or entrance fees. Transportation between locations is included.

This experience is ideal for photographers, architecture enthusiasts, urban explorers, history lovers, and travelers seeking places that remain largely undiscovered by mainstream tourism.
