Karakorum was the capital of the Great Mongolian Empire in the 13th century. It is located on the right bank of the Orkhon River, approximately 360 km southwest of Ulaanbaatar, the present capital of Mongolia.
In 1380, Karakorum was destroyed. About two centuries later, Avtai Khan, founder of the Erdene Zuu Monastery, established the monastery on the same site.
Today, Kharkhorun is rich in historical and cultural attractions, including the famous Erdene Zuu Monastery.

DAY 2 – Kharkhorum to Ulaanbaatar via Ugii Lake
After breakfast, drive to Ugii Lake, a freshwater lake located in the open steppe of Central Mongolia. The lake covers an area of approximately 25 square kilometers, measuring 7 km long and 5 km wide, with a maximum depth of 15 meters.
During winter, the lake freezes, with ice sheets forming from November to May.
Ugii Lake is rich in biodiversity. Researchers have recorded 14 species of fish, 27 species of aquatic plants, and 48 species of aquatic animals. It is also an important stopover point for more than 150 species of migratory water birds.
Due to its large populations of geese and ducks, including rare species such as the spoonbill, Ugii Lake is part of the East Asian–Australasian Flyway international network, which protects migratory bird habitats.
In 1971, Ugii Lake was designated as a Ramsar Wetland of International Importance.
The lake is considered sacred by local people, and traditional customs restrict certain activities in the water out of respect for local beliefs.
After visiting Ugii Lake, continue the drive back to Ulaanbaatar.
