Description
The Museum offers a fascinating insight into the social history of Swaffham and the surrounding area through artefacts and stories from the Stone Age to modern times
The Museum is located in a superb Georgian house built in 1776, following the Great Fire of Swaffham, offering five galleries that tell the stories of the people who lived in Swaffham through the centuries
Being an old building, the galleries are arranged on three floors which are accessible by stairs - there is a Stannah chair-lift from the ground floor to the mezzanine floor (archaeology gallery) for those with disability
Gallery One is the heart of the Museum with an intriguing collection of artefacts that help explain the social history of the Town whilst Gallery Two (mezzanine floor) takes you back through the centuries with an astonishing display of metal detector finds and unearthed secrets
The galleries on the upper floor contain a beautifully detailed and accurate model of the Town created in the middle 1930's together with stories of the people who once lived there, and displays of materials and tales of Swaffham through periods of conflict
The Carter Gallery, on the ground floor, tells the story of Howard Carter - the archaeologist who discovered the tomb of Tutankhamun in 1922 - with interactive play materials and dressing-up box (for the younger visitors!), video and display boards
The Shop offers replicas of the artefacts found in the tomb of Tutankhamun, local produce (such as honey and apple juice), gifts, maps, walking and cycling guides, and books on the immediate area and beyond
Of great importance to visitors is the Information Centre, located in the Shop, that has both a large display of leaflets on local attractions (within a 15mile radius and all the way up to the coast), details of accommodation and eateries, and internet access to make further searches and bookings. The Information Centre is a great place to begin further visits being central to several English Heritage, National Trust and private heritage sites and attractions
