Dashain, the longest and most auspicious festival in Nepal, is a 15-day celebration that holds immense cultural and religious significance for the Nepali people. It usually falls in September or October and symbolizes the victory of good over evil. Dashain commemorates the triumph of Godess Durga over the demon Mahishasura, representing the power of truth and righteousness.
Day 1: Ghatasthapana-Observe the start of Dasahain, where families plant Jamara (barely seeds)in a scared ritual to symbolize prosperity.
Day 2- Day 6- Witness the vibrant atmosphere as houses are cleaned, decorated, and families gather for the Fulpati procession. Visit to temples for worshiping.
Day 7( Fulpati): This day marks the start of the Dashain festivities, leading to preparations for the upcoming days of celebration. families collect various flowers and leaves, particularly from the banana trees and arrange them as offerings to Goddess Durga.
Day8(Maha Asthami): Visit a local temple to observe worship of Goddess Durga. Experience traditional animal sacrifices at specific locations, though some places opt for symbolic offerings.
Day 9( Maha Navami): Explore temples and witness people offering prayers for protection. This day holds significance for worshiping tools and vehicles for their safety.
Day 10( Vijaya Dashami): Experience the main celebration of Dashain by receiving Tika (a mixture of rice, yogurt and vermilion)and Jamaras from elders. Participate in visiting homes to exchange blessings, and enjoy traditional food with local families.
This entire period is marked by family gatherings, feasting , kite flying, and swings set up in the countryside. Dashain is a time for unity, where families travel from near and far to come together and celebrate. Houses are cleaned, new clothes are worn, and offerings are made to deities, making it an occasion of joy, prosperity, and cultural importance of Nepali society.
