Step into a traditional blacksmith workshop in Kathmandu and experience the centuries-old craftsmanship behind Nepal’s iconic Khukuri. This cultural hands-on experience introduces you to the history, symbolism, and forging techniques used by local artisans who have preserved this craft through generations.
Upon arrival, you will meet a skilled local blacksmith who will guide you through the traditional forging process. Learn how raw iron is heated in fire, shaped with repeated hammering, and carefully crafted into the distinctive curved form that makes the Khukuri famous throughout Nepal and around the world.
During the workshop, you will have the opportunity to participate in selected parts of the crafting process under expert supervision. Try traditional hammering techniques, observe the shaping and heating stages, and gain insight into the patience and skill required to create a handcrafted Khukuri. For safety and quality purposes, some technical finishing work will be completed by the blacksmith.
As the experience continues, your host will share stories about the Khukuri’s importance in Nepali culture and daily life. Discover its connection to Gurkha history, traditional craftsmanship, and the communities that continue to preserve this unique artisan heritage today.
Guests may also observe handle fitting, polishing, and finishing techniques used to complete the final handcrafted piece. Throughout the workshop, you can take photos, interact with local craftsmen, and enjoy an authentic cultural atmosphere rarely experienced by visitors.
