Nepal is a land of scenic grandeur, and trekking by foot is the only way to truly experience the cultural diversity of its people and places in an intimate fashion. This 11-day hike through the Sherpa-dominated region of Everest offers glorious sights, an intimate encounter with the indigenous people, and a full exploration of the vibrant markets and historic architecture of Kathmandu city.
You will be fully supported all the way, traveling with experienced trekking guides and porters. You will stay in comfortable mountain lodges and guest houses as you ascend the mountain on a 7-day hike, and enjoy inclusive meals throughout.
Day 1: Arrival – Kathmandu
Arrive at Kathmandu International Airport and transfer to your hotel. The rest of the day is free to explore the historic city at leisure.
Day 2: Kathmandu (B)
After breakfast, depart the hotel for a full-day sightseeing tour of Kathmandu, the "City of Glory."
Visit Durbar (Palace) Square, the epicenter of religious and cultural life, an area filled with old temples and historical significance. See glorious Newari architecture, such as the Kal Bhairav, Hanuman Dhoka, and Taleju Temple. Visit Kasthamandap and Kumari Ghar, home to the Living Goddess.
Continue to Swoyambhunath Stupa, majestically perched on a hill overlooking Kathmandu Valley, and said to be one of the oldest Buddhist stupas in the world. Proceed towards the Hindu Pashupatinath Temple, dedicated to Lord Shiva. The massive temple complex sits on the banks of the holy Bagmati River, and only Hindus are allowed to enter the courtyard. Admire the temple from the eastern side of the Bagmati River.
Later, visit Boudhanath, one of the largest Buddhist stupa’s in the world. The massive structure has 4 pairs of eyes, each facing the 4 cardinal directions, watching for righteous behavior of mankind and human prosperity.
Day 3: Fly to Lukla (2,800 Meters/9,187 Feet) - Trek to Phakding (2,610 Meters/8,563 Feet); 2-3 Hour Trek; 655-Foot (200-Meter) Descent; 165-Foot (50-Meter) Ascent (B/L/D)
Catch an early morning flight from Kathmandu International Airport to Lukla Airport and trek to Phakding. Descending above farmlands, pass through the Sherpa villages of Chheplung, Ghat, and Sano. See the shrines and monasteries of Drangdrak Gompa and Pema Choling Gompa, with breathtaking views of the sacred mountain of Kumbila and sister summits of the Kusum Kanguru peaks.
Day 4 - Trek to Namche (3,420 Meters/11,221 Feet); 5-6 Hour Trek; 3,280-Foot (1,000-Meter) Ascent; 330-Foot (100-Meter) Descent (B/L/D)
Heading for the Namche Bazaar, cross through the hamlets of Zamphute and Tok Tok to see dazzling Thamserku glistening in the sun.
Pass through the scenic Sherpa villages of Benkar, Chumoa, and Monjo, to reach Utche Choling Gompa on a bluff abutting the Dudhkoshi River. Then, make your way to the entrance of the UNESCO World Heritage Site of Sagarmatha National Park.
The second half of the trek involves a steep climb, crossing through to the village of Jorsale. Reach an extraordinary bridge across the Dudhkoshi River Gorge. Climb slowly up hill to Namche, where you will get your first look at Everest, peering over the Lhotse-Nuptse ridge.
Day 5: Namche Acclimatization (B/L/D)
Enjoy a day at rest and acclimatize to the high altitude. Namche is the largest market in Everest for trekkers and the indigenous people. Situated on the lap of Khumbu Himal, at an altitude of 11,220 feet (3,420 meters), it is the home of legendary Sherpas and the headquarters of the Everest National Park.
Take a walk around the valley to adjust to the thin air and visit the museum to learn about the history and traditional customs of the Sherpa people.
Day 6: Trek to Khumjung (3,780 meters/12,402 feet) (B/L/D)
Start today with an acclimatization walk from Namche Bazaar to Everest View Hotel, which at an altitude of 12,540 feet (3,800 meters) is the highest hotel in the world. As the name suggests, the hotel gives superb views of Everest - when it is not enveloped in cloud - and is considered by many to offer the best vistas in the area.
Continue over the hill to the much more traditional village of Khumjung (13,020 feet/3,970 meters). Sitting at the base of the Holy Mountain, Khumbila has many Mani Stones, old and new stupas, and a monastery that houses what is said to be a yeti scalp.
Day 7: Trek to Tengboche (3,870 Meters/12,697 Feet) (B/L/D)
Continue your descent to the Dudh Koshi River and cross the suspension bridge that takes you through the pine, juniper, and birch forests of Debouche, passing old Mani walls. Continue to Tengboche, a famous religious site of the Khumbu region. See the active monastery, which offers an insight into mountain culture and ritual Buddhist ceremonies.
Located on a ridge top, enjoy commanding views of the Everest landscape, rightly deemed to be one of the most magnificent views in the world.
Day 8: Trek to Namche (B/L/D)
Trek back to Namche Bazaar, an easy 6-mile walk that passes through delicate forests and trekkers just beginning their journeys.
Day 9: Trek to Lukla (B/L/D)
The final day's trek follows the Dudh Kosi down to Lukla, retracing the way you came up the mountain.
Day 10: Fly Back to Kathmandu (B/D)
Fly back from to Kathmandu from Lukla, and check in to your hotel. Spend the day at leisure, buying gifts and souvenirs in the markets. In the evening you will be invited to join a farewell dinner to share your photos and experiences of the trip.
Day 11: Departure (B)
It is time to say a heartfelt farewell. If you prefer to stay longer, consult Alpine Club of Himalaya for details of short tours, such as game drives in national parks, rafting activities mountain bike adventures, or trips to Tibet, India, or Bhutan.
