Join a guided tour of a bat sanctuary near Atherton. Learn about bats, see and hear microbats on a bat detector, and meet ambassador bats up close.
Arrive at the bat sanctuary, located in a forested valley 6 km from Atherton and 1.5 hours from Cairns. Be welcomed by your guide, who is passionate and knowledgeable about bats. While waiting for the tour to begin, immerse yourself in the diverse birdlife, eclectic batty artwork, and tropical gardens.
Begin by learning about the sanctuary's work from an 8-minute video and meeting the rest of your tour group. Your guide will ask where you are from so they can tailor the information they give. Sometimes there are other bat experts on the tour who can contribute to your experience.
Meet the ambassador bats, both big and small. Learn about their lives, their importance to the environment, and the threats they face. Wander around the world-class facilities in a small group, with a maximum of 12 people. See and hear the echolocation calls of microbats on a bat detector. Meet bats up close and personal, but at a respectful distance.
The tour experience varies throughout the year. Be amazed at the overwhelming cuteness of hundreds of baby flying foxes in October-December, and the teenagers January-March before their release. You may even be lucky to see a flying fox giving birth in the large flight cage.
After the tour, support the sanctuary's work with a purchase from the batty shop, which in turn supports local artisans. Maybe think about how you can help bats where you live?

The tour is located 6kms from Atherton and 1.5 hours drive from Cairns.
The tour experience varies throughout the year with different bat activities.
Maximum group size is 12 people. Bring umbrella if very wet weather but not needed in drizzly weather as we are under cover 99% of the time.

When should I book?
To guarantee availability book as soon as possible. Early booking is worth consideration especially if you planning the trip during high season like public holidays or weekends.
Cancellations
This excursion you can cancel with no cost up to 24 hours before the start of the trip. If you cancel it after 24 hours or not show up on the excursion you will still be charged the full price of the activity. Being late on pick-up or departure will be considered as not showing up.
