Description
You can spot Kassel's landmark, Hercules, from a mile away We'll take you on a tour of this fascinating building
If you haven't been to or on the Hercules, you haven't really seen Kassel - Landgrave Karl von Hessen-Kassel had the octagon ("Giant's Castle") built by the Italian architect Giovanni Francesco Guerniero from 1700 to 1717, with the figure of Hercules as the crowning glory of the 1.5-kilometer-long cascade. A steep pyramid rises above the octagonal base, topped by an 8.20 m high statue of Hercules. The work by Augsburg goldsmith Johann Jakob Anthoni is a replica of the ancient Hercules Farnese.
