Country: Netherlands
Duration:
02:30 hours
Description
Cycle with your own guide from the Binnenhof to the International Criminal Court, past the Peace Palace and the courts that made The Hague the city of peace and justice. Bike included.
Set off from the Bierkade on a Dutch city bike and follow the story of how The Hague became the international city of peace and justice. In two and a half hours you cover ground that would take a full day on foot.
The ride starts in the old centre. Across the Hofvijver you see the Binnenhof, where the Second Hague Peace Conference met in the Ridderzaal in 1907. You continue along the Lange Voorhout, past the embassies and Hotel Des Indes, the official hotel of the 1899 conference, to Noordeinde Palace, the King's working palace.
Next comes the Peace Palace, opened in 1913 with money from Andrew Carnegie and home to the International Court of Justice. Stop at the gates for photos, and from Wednesday to Sunday step into the free Visitors Centre.
Through the Scheveningse Bosjes you ride into the international zone: the courthouse of the Yugoslavia Tribunal, the OPCW, winner of the 2013 Nobel Peace Prize, Eurojust and Europol. The last stop is the International Criminal Court on the edge of the dunes, where on weekdays you can enter the public area with a photo ID.
The route is flat, about 13 km, mostly on cycle paths, and your guide keeps an easy pace. Prefer a little help on the pedals? Choose the e-bike option.
This is a private tour. Want to start or end at the Peace Palace or the ICC, for example for a hearing? Just let us know.
