Description

Embark on a 2-day trail and be the first to explore Rainbow Mountain through the Ausangate Route. Camp in serene solitude and stargaze at the Andean sky before venturing to the Mars-like Red Valley.
Experience Rainbow Mountain by hiking the secluded Ausangate Route. It's a challenging but worthy 2-day trail capturing the Ausangate Glacier, the sheer Andes, and the beauty of alpacas. Camping near Rainbow Mountain will grant you early access before the crowds. Crown by hiking to the Red Valley observatories.

Day 1: Kickstart with a 4:00 a.m. pickup and a drive to the trailhead of Quesiuno. The hike begins after breakfast with fantastic mountain views up to the first Puka Pass. You'll see the famous Ausangate Glacier Mountain upfront and the Pukaqocha lagoon on its base.

Next is a 3-hour challenging hike to Warmisaya Pass, but observing Rainbow Mountain for the first time. During this stretch, you'll see dozens of alpacas and the Vilcanota mountain range resembling the Lord of the Rings scenes. From the pass, it's downhill to the campsite of Surinecocha. Here, you'll relax, stargaze, and have dinner before sleep.

Day 2: Today, we're up early to hike to Rainbow Mountain. The leg is just one hour long but at a high altitude. You'll arrive among the first groups, so you'll get to appreciate the site and snap photos without the annoying crowds.

From this point, you'll hike to the Red Valley. You'll stop at the observatories, allowing you enough time to ignite the breathtaking Mars-like views from side to side and listen to the guide's explanations. A last trail will take you to the transport in Llacto.

Lunch is a brief stop during the drive. If time permits, you'll visit Rumicolca, the enigmatic stone gate that served as a fort. Finish with a last relaxing drive to Cusco and a drop-off at your hotel.
