Moray and the Salineras are located in Maras, a district of the province of Urubamba, located west of Cusco.
Day 1: Cusco - Maras - Moray - Salineras - Cusco. The bike tour to Moray and Maras begins with the pick up from the meeting point at 8:00 am and we will drive 45 minutes until we reach Cruz Pata (part of the tour route to the Sacred Valley and Machu Picchu) where we will start the bike route. We will pass through small villages and we will be able to see the local population going about their daily activities. After 1 hour and a half of the ride we will arrive at Moray, a unique archaeological site in the region. It consists of huge natural depressions on the surface of the land that the Inkas used to build gigantic agricultural terraces that they used as an agricultural experimentation center. The surprising thing is that the average annual temperature difference between the upper and lower part is different. After visiting Moray we continue (downhill) to the northwest of the city of Maras and arrive at the famous "Salt Mines". The "salt mines" are made up of about 4,000 small pools with an average surface area of 5 m², built into a slope of the "Qaqawiñay" mountain. People fill or "water" the pools with salt water emanating from a natural spring located at the top of the complex. We will then continue to Urubamba, where we will take a shuttle service to return to Cusco (18 h). The bicycle excursion to Maras is one of the best options to acclimatize the body. It is highly recommended to do physical activities before traveling to Machu Picchu by train or longer adventures such as the Inca Trail, the Salkantay route or the Lares hike to Machu Picchu.
