Description
Join a thrilling four-day journey through the Manu Cultural Zone, exploring breathtaking landscapes, rich biodiversity, and cultural heritage, from the Andes to the heart of the Amazon rainforest.
Day 1: Cusco (3,300 m.a.s.l.) – Cloud Forest (1,700 m.a.s.l.) – Pilcopata Inn (600 m.a.s.l.)
We will depart from Cusco early in the morning in one of our vehicles, navigating through fascinating valleys nestled between the Andes Mountains and charming countryside. Our first stop will be at pre-Inca tombs from the Lupaca culture, followed by a visit to Paucartambo, a lovely colonial town with an intriguing museum. Lunch will be enjoyed in the cloud forest, where we will witness the rich biodiversity, including the Spectacled Bear and the Cock of the Rock, Peru's national bird known for its unique mating display. We will also see various orchids, bromeliads, and ferns along the way. We’ll continue to take in the stunning natural scenery until we reach our lodge, Pilcopata Inn, for our first night.
Day 2: Pilcopata – Amazon EcoLodge (450 m.a.s.l.)
After an early breakfast, we’ll take a walk to observe the local fauna, including monkeys and birds. Next, we will visit a coca plantation and a wildlife rescue center. Afterward, we’ll head to Port Atalaya on the banks of the Alto Madre de Dios River at 500 m.a.s.l. Here, we’ll board a boat to explore the diverse bird species, such as herons, vultures, and cormorants, until we arrive at Amazon Manu Lodge. There, we’ll have lunch and enjoy a refreshing swim in the river. In the afternoon, we’ll visit a swamp area to spot birds like toucans, woodpeckers, and macaws. As night falls, we’ll search for the glowing eyes of caimans before returning to the lodge for the night.
Day 3: Amazon Manu Lodge (450 m.a.s.l.)
We’ll start the day early with a boat trip to the macaw clay lick, where various parrot species, including the blue-headed parrot and the chestnut-fronted macaw, gather each morning to eat mineral-rich clay. After this, we’ll return to the lodge for breakfast. Following that, we’ll embark on a 2.5-3 hour hike through the forest. After lunch, you can relax at the lodge or take a swim in the river, and there's also an option for zip-lining. In the afternoon, we’ll visit Lake Machuwasi, where we can explore by balsa rafts, hoping to spot the prehistoric hoatzin, monkeys, and capybaras. Later, we’ll take a night walk to search for insects and amphibians. After dinner, we’ll spend the night at Amazon Manu Lodge.
Day 4: Amazon EcoLodge – Cusco
After a hearty breakfast, we’ll have a chance to observe hummingbirds around the lodge before boarding our boat back to Port Atalaya. Our bus will be waiting to take us back to Cusco, with lunch along the route. We expect to arrive between 5:30 and 6:30 PM.
