Description

Explore the Danube Delta, a UNESCO World Heritage Site. Discover the second-largest and best-preserved delta in Europe, and learn about its unique geomorphological features.
Explore the Danube Delta, the second-largest and best-preserved of Europe's deltas. Designated a UNESCO World Heritage Site in 1991, it is classified in Romania as both a national biosphere reserve and a national park.

Located in the northwestern Black Sea region, the Danube Delta is a geomorphological accumulation landform that developed at the river's mouth. It falls into the category of regional landforms characterized as wet plains formed on fluvial alluvial deposits, featuring a high degree of fragmentation.

The delta is characterized by positive landforms known as grinduri (elevated ridges or levees) and negative landforms consisting of water-filled depressions (lakes). Currently, the delta presents as a gently sloping, flat expanse crisscrossed by a network of waterways—river branches, canals, and channels—and dotted with lakes. Elevations range from 8–10 meters above sea level in the ridge areas to between -2 and -4 meters in the lacustrine depressions.
