Description
Explore the Court of Târgoviște, Chindia Tower, Dealu Monastery on a guided tour. Learn about the Romanian Revolution and its end: the trial and execution of Nicolae and Elena Ceausescu.
Begin your journey at the Princely Court of Târgoviște, a complex of medieval buildings and fortifications that served as a residence for the Voivodes of Wallachia and as a significant point in the country's defensive system. Learn about the court’s history, first attested during the reign of Mircea the Elder, appearing in a document issued by his son and co-ruler, Michael I, dating from 1417–1418.
Next, visit the Chindia Tower, an iconic monument for the city of Târgoviște, built by the ruler Vlad the Impaler around 1460.
Continue to the Museum of Dâmbovița Military Traditions (formerly the Cavalry School), situated at the intersection of Carol I Boulevard (inaugurated in 1897) and the new King Ferdinand Boulevard, and in the immediate vicinity of the Târgoviște Railway Station (1884).
Learn about the military unit operating within the former Cavalry School, which became, in December 1989, one of the focal points of the Romanian Revolution; it was here that the dictatorial couple leading Romania's totalitarian regime—Nicolae and Elena Ceaușescu—met their end.
Finally, head to Dealu Monastery, located near the city of Târgoviște and first mentioned in documents on November 17, 1431. Discover the original monastery, likely founded by Mircea the Elder, and see the site where the first printed book in Wallachia (the Liturgicon, 1508)—and indeed in the entire Balkans—was produced, transforming the monastery into the region's first major center for the dissemination of written culture.
Learn about the monastery’s history as a princely necropolis, housing the tombs of important rulers—most notably that of Michael the Brave (whose head is interred here)—a fact that imbues the site with immense national symbolic and historical value.
