Description
Cross the border to explore the "City of Tsars," the massive Tsarevets Fortress, and the traditional village of Arbanasi. A day of medieval legends and Bulgarian culture starting from Bucharest.
Embark on a Cross-Border Journey to the Heart of Medieval Bulgaria.
Escape the bustle of Bucharest for a day and step back in time as you cross the Danube into Bulgaria. This curated day trip takes you through dramatic landscapes to discover the medieval capital of the Second Bulgarian Empire and the charming stone-clad traditions of Arbanasi.
Spiritual Beginnings: Basarabov Rock Monastery.
Our first stop is just across the border at the Monastery of St. Dimitrie Basarabov—the only active rock-carved monastery in Bulgaria. Tucked into the cliffs above the Rusenski Lom River, this sacred site offers a serene and unique start to our historical exploration.
Veliko Tarnovo: The City of Tsars.
We then arrive in Veliko Tarnovo, often called the "City of Tsars." The crown jewel of the city is the Tsarevets Fortress, a formidable medieval stronghold. As you walk through its gates and climb the hill, your guide will bring to life the stories of emperors, royal intrigues, and the epic battles that shaped the Balkans. Afterward, enjoy some leisure time to explore the Samovodska Charshiya, the old market street where local artisans still practice centuries-old crafts.
Arbanasi: A Living Museum.
The journey continues to the architectural reserve of Arbanasi. This picturesque village is famous for its massive stone houses and rich history. We will visit the Konstantsaliev House, an impressive fortress-like residence that provides an intimate look into the daily life, culture, and traditions of wealthy 17th-century Bulgarians.
Optional Wonders & Local Flavors:
While in Arbanasi, you have the option to further explore the spiritual side of the village with visits to the Church of St. Demetrius or the world-renowned Church of the Nativity, famous for its intricate frescoes.
For lunch, you can choose between the panoramic terraces of Veliko Tarnovo or the traditional taverns of Arbanasi to enjoy authentic Bulgarian cuisine.
Important Note on Entry Fees & Logistics To offer the best value for transport and guiding, entrance tickets to the monuments and rock monastery are not included in the base price. Your guide will assist the group with on-site ticket acquisition to ensure a smooth flow.
Please note that lunch and drinks are also at your own expense, giving you the freedom to choose your preferred dining style.
