Today, the surrounding forest is a popular destination for hikers and birdwatchers due to its recovering biodiversity.
On arrival, hike through the forest with your guide, frequently spotting tropical birds. A highlight of the hike is a visit to a hidden wartime tunnel and an underground structure known as the "Vietnamese kitchen," which was used by guerrilla combatants during the conflict to cook without producing visible smoke that could reveal their position to aerial reconnaissance. At the end of the hike, cool off in natural spring-fed pools in the area before returning to San Salvador.
