Description

Discover the heart of the Perito Moreno Glacier with Big Ice: explore crevasses, caves, and blue lagoons accompanied by expert mountain tour guides. Experience the best trekking of your life!
Big Ice is an unforgettable, physically demanding experience that combines adventure, nature, and exploration in the heart of the Perito Moreno Glacier. The excursion begins in El Calafate, where passengers are transferred in comfortable buses to Los Glaciares National Park. During the trip, tour guides provide information about the glacier, its surroundings, and the activity.
The adventure begins at the port of "Bajo de las Sombras," located 70 km from El Calafate. There, visitors board a boat to cross Lake Rico, sailing for 20 minutes in front of the majestic south face of the glacier. Upon arrival at the refuge, expert mountain guides welcome the group, divide them into subgroups, and equip them with crampons, helmets, and harnesses, in addition to explaining the necessary safety rules. The tour begins with a hike through the moraine and forest that lasts approximately two hours. This section offers panoramic views of the glacier, preparing visitors for the ascent onto the ice. Once equipped and on the glacier, visitors witness a unique landscape: blue lagoons, deep crevasses, huge sinkholes and, if we are lucky, fascinating caves that offer a completely new perspective on the natural world.
The ice trekking, which lasts approximately three hours, allows passengers to explore the glacier in detail and better understand its immensity and uniqueness. Mountain guides share information about the formation and dynamics of the glacier, while visitors enjoy the surrounding views, including the Dos Picos, Pietrobelli, and Cervantes hills. In addition, there is a 30-minute lunch break in an incredibly beautiful setting.
The hike ends with the return to the refuge along the same route, allowing for one last moment to contemplate the majesty of the landscape. Participants then board the boat again for a close-up view of the south face of the glacier before returning to civilization.
The excursion includes a one-hour guided visit to the Perito Moreno Glacier walkways, located 7 km from the port, where you can enjoy panoramic views and explore self-guided trails. In total, the experience lasts approximately 12 hours if using the transportation provided, or 7.5 hours if passengers make their own way to the "Bajo de las Sombras" port from El Calafate.
Big Ice takes place in a dynamic natural environment, where weather conditions and the characteristics of the glacier are constantly changing. However, as long as safety conditions allow, the excursion will not be canceled, ensuring a unique and safe experience. We look forward to seeing you for a true mountaineering adventure! Suitable for ages 18 to 50.
